This 1999 Jaguar XK8 convertible has been a resident of California since new, until we shipped it to the Netherlands. After 27 years of service, it should now be considered a project car in need of cosmetic work and a service check up.
The body is straight and solid. As a result from the harsh California sun, the clear coat is fading and peeling. Hence, the car needs a partial repaint. Affected panels are the bonnet, trunk lid, top of rear fenders, mirror caps and the top of the windshield surround. The rear bumper also has some small paint damage, which requires a repaint.
The VIN report shows no damage history, and the mileage has increased logically over time. The car currently shows 77.570 miles. The automatic convertible top mechanism works well, while the light soft top canvas would benefit from thorough cleaning. Wheels are chrome plated and would look much better after a repaint to their original silver grey.
Mechanically, the XK8 appears to be in healthy condition. It starts, runs and drives well, and seems to have been serviced regularly. The VIN report shows various recent service entries (2018, 2019 and 2022). Mileage has barely increased since 2022. Currently, the engine runs in failsafe mode, which we have not further investigated. Our workshop does not have modern diagnostic equipment; we simply replaced a faulty fuel pump to get it running. Oil pressure is as it should be and there is no excessive smoke or mechanical noise.
The headlights need to be replaced or refurbished. As a result of sun exposure, the sealant between the headlight unit and lens has come loose. The left hand headlight has moisture damage, and the right hand unit has a missing lens.
The interior is finished in beige (SDZ Kashmere) and, after almost 30 years, needs some cosmetic attention. The driver’s side seat shows cracked leather and the carpets would benefit from deep cleaning. Factory manuals are included. The car comes with 3 keys, one of which has a remote control.
This XK8 convertible is an interesting project car for professionals and practical enthusiasts.
