1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL combines the early R129 design with the 5,0-litre V8 engine, finished in red with a beige and tan interior. Imported from California, it offers a rust-free basis for recommissioning and a cosmetic project.

The VIN history report records four owners and shows that the Mercedes remained in California from new. No accidents are registered, and the last recorded emissions inspection took place in 2023. The odometer currently reads 96.601 miles. Its history indicates very limited use in recent years, with the mileage increasing from around 90.000 in 2010 to 96.000 today.

The car starts, runs and drives, with good oil pressure. However, after such limited use it should be regarded as a recommissioning project rather than a turn-key example. A general service is required, the spark plug leads should be replaced and the alternator has a noisy bearing.

The dry Californian climate has preserved the body well, and we have found no rust. The same climate has been less kind to the cosmetic condition. The red paint has areas of peeling clear coat, while the interior requires renovation. In particular, the leather seats will need to be retrimmed.

Both the factory hardtop and the folding soft top are included. The operation of the soft-top mechanism has not yet been tested; we will update the description shortly. For now, prospective buyers should assume that the hydraulic cylinders require rebuilding and that the soft-top fabric needs replacement.

The Mercedes comes with one ignition key. The key for the locking fuel cap is missing. No owner’s manuals or substantial service history are present, apart from one invoice for tyres. Also missing is the spare wheel.

This is an honest, rust-free 500SL project with documented long-term California history. Its main needs are mechanical recommissioning and cosmetic renovation, offering a solid starting point for someone who prefers improving an original car rather than repairing structural corrosion.
