The Mercedes’ R107 SL series is firmly established as a one of the brands classic icons. Values have climbed steadily, especially for high quality examples in attractive colour combinations.
We acquired this Mercedes 450SL in the US state of Minnesota, where it was sold after vandalism damage to the canvas soft top. A low mileage unrestored survivor, the SL is in need of cosmetic work and mechanical recommissioning.
Originally delivered in DB735G Astralsilber, the car shows one external repaint in its original colour. The exterior body shows age appropriate imperfections. Most noticeable are rust bubbles on the rear wheel arches. Other rust damage was found at the front corner of the left hand sill panel, the driver’s side floor board, both front wheel splash panels, the spare wheel compartment and right rear trunk floor panel (directly below the battery).
This Mercedes only shows 75.241 mls on the odometer, which seems to be probably correct based on the condition of the interior and engine bay. It runs and drives, but would need a thorough mechanical recommissioning at this point. The engine runs nicely, with excellent oil pressure, but has a noticeable rattle at idle, probably from a loose timing chain or valve clatter. The tyres are relatively new, but front end wheel allignment needs to be adjusted, as the car pulls to the right.
The interior of this Mercedes 450SL is in relatively well-preserved original condition, but needs to be at least partially renovated. The dashboard top shows typical cracks, indicating a likely history in a warmer climate than the US midwest. The blue MB tex vinyl upholstery is in good original condition, with firm cushions and some wear on the driver’s side back area. As mentioned, the soft top should be replaced. Also, the hard top will need some work. Missing parts are the rearview mirror and jack. The car’s history is unknown.
An unmolested survivor in an attractive colour combination. This classic Mercedes SL is a great starting point for a light partial restoration.
