1973 Volkswagen Beetle 1600 convertible

In 1973, this Volkswagen Beetle Convertible rolled off the assembly line in a vibrant shade of orange, destined for life on the other side of the Atlantic. Decades later, it’s made its way back to Europe as a restoration project, wearing a well-worn red repaint that it received long ago. We can only imagine the adventures this Beetle enjoyed in the USA, but one thing’s for sure: time and the elements have left their marks, and now it’s ready for a thorough restoration.

The body is a mix of encouraging points and typical Beetle trouble spots. On the plus side, the doors and fenders are solid and straight – a good foundation to work with. On the downside, the floor pans have rust damage. The driver´s side floor pan has already been taken out completely.  The silver lining is that a pair of brand new floor boards is included with the car, ready to be welded in to restore the Beetle’s underbelly. Some more patch work on the body tub is to be expected, but structurally the Beetle is in better than average condition (for an unrestored car).

As for the paint, beneath the tired red exterior you might find traces of the original orange poking through. The old repaint has plenty of patina, and will require a thorough bare metal respray,  whether back to its factory orange or a colour of your choice.

Under the rear engine lid lies the Beetle’s 1600 cc flat-four engine (code “AK”), still equipped with its original Solex carburetor. Remarkably, we’ve had this air-cooled engine running – but only via an external fuel supply and a jumper wire to the starter motor. A bit hesitant at first, but eventually firing on all cylinders. The fuel tank has been removed and cleaned out, so it will need reconnecting (along with new fuel lines, a pump and a filter) before the Beetle can drink from its own tank again. With a proper fuel system reconnection a service check up and tune-up, the stout little flat-four should roar back to life as it did in its glory days.

On the mechanical front, the brakes and clutch systems will need a full overhaul. The electrical system also requires attention. Consider it an invitation to give the entire mechanical system a good once-over during the restoration process, to ensure that it becomes a reliable driver once again.

Inside, the Beetle needs a complete interior redo. The one pleasant surprise is the black mohair convertible top, which is in good condition. However, just about everything below that roof needs attention. The seats are worn out, the upholstery has seen better days and the dashboard and trim will need some restoration work as well. It comes with two keys.

Overall, this 1973 VW Beetle Convertible is an honest project car that offers a great starting point for classic Volkswagen enthusiasts who don´t mind getting their hands dirty.

One thing that comes hassle-free is the paperwork. This Beetle comes with a US (California) title, along with the necessary EU import documents, and all import duties have been paid. It will be sold on a commercial invoice, issued by Dandy Classics. In plain terms, it’s legally imported and ready for registration in any European country once you’ve completed the restoration.
