1971 Volkswagen 411 Variant

The 411 Variant is a rare sight in the classic VW scene. On paper it has a lot going for it: Pininfarina styling, a more powerful engine shared with the Porsche 914 and a spacious and versatile interior.

This original, unrestored Type 4 was imported from North Hollywood, California, where it was last actively registered in 2005. Not currently running, the car needs to be brought back to life with care.

Striking seventies colour: Texas Gelb. The car has been repainted once on the outside and the paint shows its age by now. Call it patina or weathering; whether you like this depends on personal preferences. In any case, the car in this condition is a perfect starting point for both creating a patina driver and restoring it to pristine condition.

Due to the Californian climate, the bodywork is well preserved. Nevertheless, some rust damage is visible, including on the lower part the front fenders, in a corner of the front boot floor and on top of the right front fender, coming from the wheel well.

The engine turns by hand; no starting attempt has been made yet. The air intake, distributor cap and a few fuel lines were loosely mounted in the engine bay, pointing to a fuel delivery problem. Getting this 1700 cc fuel injected engine running again will have to start with a thorough cleanup and step-by-step system check. The engine is mounted to an automatic transmission and the odometre shows 68.477 mls, believed to be original.

The interior and window rubbers are weathered by the sun. So there is some work on the inside; the good news is that everything is still original. The original instruction booklet and some old registration documents are still present, albeit somewhat weathered. Missing parts are the spare wheel and tail lights (except for some bits and pieces). One key.

A nice project for the air-cooled VW enthusiast who is ready for something different from a Beetle or a bus.
