This 1963 Triumph TR4 restoration project was acquired in Arizona. Judging by its exceptionally well-preserved chassis and body structure, it appears to have spent its entire life in the dry southwestern United States.
The car still wears its factory original white paint on many panels. The paint has heavily weathered over the years, with surface rust visible on various exterior panels. Structural rust is remarkably limited, with visible corrosion confined mainly to the left-hand outer sill panel and the battery tray. Aside from a number of small dents and signs of age, the body presents an excellent foundation for restoration.
The engine turns freely by hand and on the starter motor. During inspection, excessive crankshaft end float was found and the oil pan was removed. The thrust washers had become displaced, a well-known Triumph issue. While the engine will require rebuilding, inspection revealed no evidence of catastrophic bearing failure.
Based on the close relationship between the commission, body and engine numbers, this TR4 is believed to retain its original matching-numbers drivetrain. An additional “TRIUMPH STC-63” identification tag is fitted to the firewall, a feature occasionally seen on U.S.-market Triumphs of this period. It has a factory four-speed gearbox with overdrive.
The car is relatively complete and retains many original components. The windscreen is damaged and the front bumper is missing. The trunk lock and one hubcap are also absent. The dashboard features the desirable early painted metal fascia. According to the commission plate, the car was originally fitted with a blue interior. As the original seats were missing, we sourced a very nice pair of black TR4 seats with white piping, which are included with the sale. The odometer currently shows 39.256 miles.
An honest, highly original and remarkably solid Triumph TR4 that would make an excellent candidate for a high-quality restoration.
