This MGA Coupé restoration project was acquired by us in Wisconsin, USA. The car carries the original Twin Cam commission number plate YM1/2054. According to the British Motor Museum Heritage Certificate, this number relates to a UK-market right-hand-drive MGA Twin Cam Coupé, originally finished in Mineral Blue with a black interior.
Further research through the MGA Twin Cam community, including information from a previous owner in the USA, indicates that the current body and chassis are not from the original Twin Cam. They appear to have been used as a basis to rebuild YM1/2054. The original Twin Cam drivetrain, brakes and running gear are not present.
The car is currently in standard MGA specification, fitted with a BMC Gold Seal 1600 B-series pushrod engine, drum brakes and wire wheels. The engine turns by hand and shows clean oil inside. For what it is worth, the odometer indicates 18.575 miles.
This is a full body-off restoration project. The chassis appears to be in above-average restorable condition, and the body structure is also a usable basis for restoration. Typical rust repair will be required to the sills, doglegs and lower fender areas. Further rust damage is visible to the steel bonnet frame and boot floor.
The car is incomplete and missing several parts, including the windscreen, rear window, seats, bumpers and lights. The wooden floorboards are also missing. A reproduction plexiglass rear window is available from specialist suppliers.
The car is rolling. The tyres currently hold air for a short period and the car can be steered on the front wheels, although the steering linkage is presently disconnected.
A nice period-style detail is the old “Competizione Veloce Speed Trials” plaque fitted to the dashboard. We have not been able to trace its origin or verify any competition history, but it adds a bit of character to the car.
This is not an original-specification Twin Cam restoration project. It is best understood as an MGA Coupé restoration project with YM1/2054 Twin Cam history and documentation. An interesting basis for a period-style MGA Coupé restoration, competition-style build or mild restomod.
