This red 1989 Corvette Convertible was recently acquired from a California auction, after being off the road for nearly two decades. Following a fuel pump replacement and a temporary bypass of the fuel relay, we were able to bring the L98 V8 back to life. The car is now offered as a restoration project for hands-on enthusiasts.
The fiberglass body shows damage to the left front corner – repairable with basic fibreglass and plastic repair skills. A number of cosmetic imperfections in the red finish make a full respray the sensible way forward. The right-hand side mirror glass is damaged, and the wheels display some curb rash on the outer lips.
Mechanically, the car needs a full service and mechanical inspection before road use. The engine runs but stumbles intermittently—likely due to old fuel and clogged fuel injectors that need cleaning and testing. The oil appears clean. The tyres are aged and one (rear right) has a slow leak. The radiator shows signs of age, and the gear selector requires adjustment—it currently doesn’t engage ‘Park’. One of the rear transverse spring’s center brackets should be replaced. The spare wheel is missing.
Mileage reads 64,281, with a VIN report showing a logical and consistent mileage history – only 15 miles added since 1999. The last California registration sticker dates back to 2004. Two registered owners since 1997.
Inside, the cabin requires significant attention. A leaking soft top allowed water intrusion, affecting the upholstery and electrical components. While the seats may be salvageable, new carpets and a replacement convertible top are essential. The digital dashboard is non-functional and will need professional repair.
With the right investment of time and effort, this C4 has the potential to shine again.
