This rubber bumper MGB roadster is a California car in original, unrestored condition. Last registered in 2018, we recently brought the engine back to life in our workshop. With just 48.685 mls on the odometre, this is an excellent candidate for a thorough recommissioning or partial restoration.
The body is mostly solid, with minor rust bubbles on the rear dogleg areas (lower part of rear fenders behind the sill panels) and lower front fenders. Originally, the car was delivered in a brighter tone of red, but it was painted maroon red decades ago. The paint finish looks tyred and dull, with paint peeling off at the edges of most panels. Like with many MGB’s, the trunk lid of this car is bent where it attaches to the stay rod.
The engine runs, with good oil pressure. It still has its original single Stromberg setup, with smog pump. The exhaust gasket appears to be leaking and the valve cover gasket has dried out. It’s a mechanically sound engine that clearly needs a thorough service check up, with a less restricted carburettor conversion.
The standard 4 speed gearbox could not be checked, as the clutch hydraulics are not working. It mechanically shifts through gears easily. All other wearable service parts on this car should be gone over; most is expected to be about two decades old. The car sits on old Michelin XZX tyres, with dry cracks.
The interior is in original condition and mostly intact. It will need to be lightly refurbished and could use a new carpet set. The convertible top is old and should be replaced. A tonneau cover and convertible top cover are included, as is the original jack and tool kit and some spare parts.
A nice original survivor MGB that would make a straightforward project car.
