Automotive marketing in the 1970's was all about overstatements. Especially in the United States of America. The original People's Car back then was an old-fashioned piece of traditionalism, already superseded by the Volkswagen Golf in 1974. Enter the Super Beetle. It's a Beetle - with superpowers. A roaring 50 hp 1600 cc air-cooled boxer, packed in a two inch longer body. Not even close to a super car, but apparently good enough to be named a Super Beetle.
The Europeans simply called it the 1303 Beetle, Käfer, Coccinelle, Maggiolino, Kever, Bobble, Garbus or Buba. No frills, just an evolution, later known as the final version. Back in '76 the Beetle was already considered a classic. The people had become emotionally attached to the little bug, after more than 30 years of mass production.
Our Super Beetle was sold new in the USA as a fuel injected model (AJ engine prefix), later to be converted to a Solex carburettor.
A topless beetle in California. A perfect picture. Reality is that a convertible top wears out, so rain can come in. A leaky convertible top turns a convertible into a bath tub. Hence, after 44 years, this Beetle needs new floor panels. The body tub and fenders appear to be mostly solid. Please check our pictures carefully, and do not hesitate to get in touch if you need additional shots of any more details.
Our Beetle's interior needs to be completely refurbished. The dashboard has a repairable crack, door panels are worn, seats should be reupholstered and the convertible top + top frame are missing. Not a big issue, since parts are readily available.
Technically, the VW Beetle will need a fair share of tender loving care. As a starting point, the 1600 cc engine runs nicely and the clutch and gearbox work properly. Brakes are vaguely functioning, indicating a complete rebuild. The electrical system needs attention, with working headlights, and non-functioning horn, hazard lights and wipers.
A straightforward restoration will turn this neglected Beetle into a proper Super Beetle.
