1973 MG MGB roadster

This 1973 MGB was imported from Oregon, USA, where it was last registered in 2013. Originally a white car, it was repainted black at some point in the past. We recently brought the car back to life with a basic oil change and fuel pump tinkering. It is now offered for sale as a project car.

The body structure looks very solid, but has visible rust damage on the rear dogleg areas (lower part of rear fenders behind the sill panels). Floors and sills appear solid, with deep surface rust in the trunk floor due to water coming in.

The paint finish looks weathered by now, especially on the trunk lid. Sooner or later, this MGB will need a complete respray.

The engine is in running condition, with good oil pressure. In our workshop, it received an oil change, with valve adjustment and a new valve cover gasket. The Weber carburetor would need at least a basic service check up; we did not give it any attention. Thermostat and temperature sensor were replaced, but the temperature gauge reading is off. This points to the gauge itself; it quickly rises to a high level.

Further mechanical attention is needed, as our aim was simply to get the car running. Brakes initially worked, but the master cylinder failed. The clutch is operational and the car shifts through gears. The MGB is equiped with a desirable overdrive gearbox, the working of which we could not test. The bonnet release cable is stuck and needs to be lubricated or replaced. The odometre indicates a total mileage of 08.096, likely 108.096.

The interior needs a complete refurbishment. The convertible top is functional, with a small tear on a rear corner. The material is getting old however, so it will eventually need to be replaced.

A nice project MGB that could easily be brought to a higher standard.
