1973 Mercedes 450SL

The Mercedes’ R107 SL series is firmly established as a one of the brands classic icons. Values have climbed steadily, especially for unmolested high quality examples. Early V8 cars demand a premium, thanks to their classic looks and better performing engines. Unfortunately, the earlier 107’s are more vulnerable to rust damage.

This Mercedes 450SL has spent its life in California, where it looks to have been mostly garage kept. Last serviced in 2.000 miles ago in 1989, it will need to be recommissioned, although the car runs and drives well.

Originally delivered in DB735G Astralsilber, the car was repainted in its original colour, probably in the early 1980’s. From a distance the paint looks presentable. However, on closer look it shows various imperfections, as a result of interaction between 2 layers of paint of different age and chemical composition. The body is all solid, with no signs of rust (except for a minor section around a rubber drain plug that can easily be cleaned up; please check our website for a detailed picture). Light panel damage to the front left wheel arch.

The exterior trim pieces need to be polished up and the bumpers should be re-chromed (especially the front right piece).

Mechanically the car makes a healthy impression, although it has only driven about 2.000 miles in the last 33 years. 116.815 mls on the odometer, believed to be original. The last service sticker dates back to 1989, at 114.410 mls. Hence, a preventive maintenance check up is required, including replacement of 30-plus year old hoses, belts and tyres. The water pump is leaking and should be replaced. It would be wise to combine this with replacement of the coolant radiator.

The interior of this Mercedes 450SL is in well-preserved original condition. Unlike most of its California contemporaries, the dashboard top has not suffered from excessive sun exposure and is in excellent condition. The black MB tex vinyl upholstery is in good original condition, with firm seat cushions. Becker Europa AM FM radio. The car comes with its factory booklets, paper build sheet, jack, tool kit and 2 keys. We assume the black canvas soft top is still factory original, in good condition except for the yellow faded rear screens.

A rust-free, unmolested survivor in an attractive colour combination. This classic Mercedes SL is a great starting point for a mid-life upgrade.
