The front is like a car, the back is like a truck. It is still debated what body style to categorise the El Camino with. Some simply call it a mule. Love it or hate it, the Chevy El Camino is a remarkable piece of americana that has become an icon in popular culture.
Our El Camino is actually a GMC Sprint, which is the much rarer version. We acquired it in southern California, in unrestored condition, re-badged as a Chevrolet El Camino. This is a project car for restoration. It could be brought back to original shine, preserved as a patina driver or customised up to your own taste.
Body and chassis are solid. Unfortunately, the combination of pilarless doors and dried out rubbers led to moisture entering the cabin, causing the rear floor boards to rust through. Also, some repair work is needed on the lower rear panel, just behind the rear wheel. The truck bed, doors and body panels all appear solid. The white paint shows its age and the blue paint on the bonnet has started to peel off, since it absorbed more heat in the California sun.
The interior needs to be completely refurbished. Current mileage of 00.707 mls. 2 keys included, as well as the factory instruction manual. The crome is mostly in good condition, with obvious small signs of wear. The grilles top right corner has broken off, but is still included and could be repaired.
The 350 V8 engine turns by hand, with oil and coolant levels in order. The starter motor does not engage when connecting a battery. Other mechanical attention is likely needed. The automatic transmission shifter link was disconnected and engine and transmission show signs of oil leaks. The previous owner removed the fuel tank, after it rusted through. The car will be sold without a battery. New brake pads included.
This GMC Sprint is a good starting point to restore a desirable cult classic.
