Dreaming of a classic drop-top Italian sports car with Pininfarina styling and a potent twin cam engine? If your budget is limited, this sounds like an impossible combination. Yet the classic Fiat 124 spider offers exotic car look and feel at an affordable car’s price tag.
Early Fiat 124 spiders have the purest form, with their small chrome bumpers and classic interior trim. This particular 1970 Fiat 124 spider 1600 was last registered in Minnesota USA. It is in need of a complete rotisserie restoration.
The body shows an older respray in the original orange colour. Several cracks and paint bubbling are starting to appear, and the car clearly has some old repairs covered up by bondo. Most noticeably, metalwork is required on the sills, front and rear fenders, front spring pans and parts of the floor panels. A lot of work is to be expected, but with the availability of repair panels the car can certainly be restored to as-new condition.
The engine is in running condition, but will need at least a head gasket replacement (oil leak on the exhaust manifold and air bubbles in the radiator coolant. It's electrical system appears to be in good order. The Fiat 124 spider looks to have been serviced fairly recently, with new spark plugs and cables, clean oil and coolant and a new fuel pump. Brakes do not work. Functioning clutch and gearbox.
The interior is in original, unmolested condition and needs to be completely renovated. Surprisingly, the period original radio is still working.
This early Fiat 124 Spider is an interesting project car for Italian car enthusiasts with welding skills.
